What This Calculator Does

This calculator counts decking. Enter the deck's length and width, the board width and the gap you will leave, and it returns how many boards of your chosen length the surface needs, plus the approximate screw count. It converts the lumberyard question — “how many 16-footers?” — into a number you can order.

Deck boards are bought in fixed lengths and installed with deliberate gaps, which makes the count less obvious than plain area math. The calculator handles the effective-width arithmetic that decking actually follows, so the order matches the deck.

Effective Width: The Decking Arithmetic

Boards cover their actual width plus the gap beside them. The standard 5/4×6 decking board measures 5.5 inches across (nominal names overstate lumber — a “2×6” is also 5.5 wide); add a 1/4-inch gap and each row consumes 5.75 inches of deck width. Rows = deck width ÷ effective width, rounded up: a 12-ft-wide deck is 144 inches ÷ 5.75 ≈ 25.04 → 26 rows. If boards run the deck's 16-ft length in single spans, that is 26 boards of 16 ft.

When the deck is longer than available boards, rows are built from butted segments — a 20-ft run might use a 12 and an 8 — and joints must land on joists, staggered between neighboring rows so they do not stripe the deck. In that case count total linear feet (rows × deck length) and divide by the board length you are buying, then round up per row segmenting. The calculator reports both rows and total linear footage so either purchasing style works.

Gaps, Materials, and Movement

The gap is functional, not decorative: it drains rain, sheds debris, and gives boards room to move with moisture. The right gap at install depends on the material's moisture state. Kiln-dried wood and composite decking are installed at their final gap — 1/8 to 1/4 inch, per the manufacturer (composites specify exactly, and their warranties care). Wet pressure-treated lumber, the classic green-brown budget board, is commonly installed nearly tight because it shrinks as it dries, opening its own gap over the first season; gapping wet PT a full 1/4 inch can yield 1/2-inch canyons by next summer.

Movement also drives fastening. Screws (or hidden clips for grooved composite) beat nails, which back out as boards cycle; two fasteners per board per joist is standard, so a 26-board deck over joists at 16-inch centers — 13 joists across 16 ft — wants roughly 26 × 13 × 2 ≈ 676 screws, which is why decking screws sell in 5-lb boxes. Composite and hardwood decking each have their own fastener systems; whatever the system, the count scales the same way and the calculator's estimate keeps the order honest.

Patterns, Waste, and Buying Well

Straight decking perpendicular to the joists is the efficient default: 5-10% waste covers end cuts and culls. Diagonal decking looks sharp and costs for it — every board ends in an angled cut whose offcut rarely reuses, pushing waste to 15%+, and it shortens effective spans (diagonal boards cross joists at a longer interval, sometimes requiring tighter joist spacing). Picture-frame borders — a perimeter board framing the field — add their own linear footage and mitered corners, plus blocking beneath. The pattern decision is aesthetic; its waste percentage is arithmetic, and it belongs in the order.

At the yard, the extra margin buys selection power: lumber stacks contain crowned, bowed, and wane-edged boards, and ordering 10% over lets you reject the worst rather than install them. Check boards for crown and lay them crown-up; keep composite of one production run together for color; and store boards flat and stickered if installation waits. A deck surface is the most visible lumber purchase most people make — the calculator gets the quantity right, and the margin gets the quality right.
