Reading the Danger Categories

The NWS pairs the index with exposure categories that are worth knowing cold. 80-90°F: caution — fatigue possible with prolonged exposure and activity. 90-103°F: extreme caution — heat cramps and heat exhaustion possible. 103-124°F: danger — heat exhaustion likely, heat stroke possible with continued activity. 125°F+: extreme danger — heat stroke likely. Advisories and excessive-heat warnings key off these bands, adjusted regionally for what populations are acclimatized to.

The categories assume an average person; the thresholds arrive earlier for children, older adults, outdoor workers, athletes mid-exertion, and anyone on medications that impair heat regulation. The practical responses are unglamorous and effective: shift exertion to morning, hydrate ahead of thirst, take shade breaks on a schedule rather than by feel (heat illness famously degrades judgment first), and know the escalation signs — cramps and heavy sweating, then cool clammy skin and nausea (exhaustion: stop, cool, hydrate), then hot dry skin and confusion (stroke: emergency, cool aggressively, call for help). The index's job is to trigger that seriousness a day early.

What the Index Assumes — and Does Not

Like wind chill, the heat index has boundaries that casual use ignores. It is computed for shade and light wind: full sun can raise the effective value by up to 15°F, which is why a “98 feels like 108” forecast can undersell a treeless afternoon.
