Counting Pavers Like Tile — Outdoors
The count is area division with outdoor waste. One 12 × 12-inch paver covers a square foot, so 120 sq ft needs 120 before waste; a 4 × 8 brick covers 32 sq in (4.5 per sq ft, so 540 of them); a 16 × 16 slab covers 1.78 sq ft (68 of them). The general formula — (area × 144) ÷ (paver W × H), rounded up, times (1 + waste) — is the same as tiling, and so is the waste logic: every edge ends in a cut, offcuts rarely reuse, and curves and diagonals multiply the cutting. Use 10% for straight rectangles, 15% for curves and patterns.
Two outdoor-specific notes sharpen the order. Multi-size “pattern packs” (mixed slab sizes laid in a repeating module) are bought by the pack's stated coverage rather than per piece — compute the area plus waste and divide by pack coverage. And like tile and wallpaper, pavers vary subtly by production run: order the full quantity at once, and store a few spares permanently, because a stained or cracked paver years later is a five-minute swap with a matching spare and a visible patch without one.
The Section Underneath: Base and Sand
A paver surface is a system: compacted gravel base, bedding sand, pavers, edge restraint, joint sand. The base — 4-6 inches of crushed gravel for patios and walkways, 8-12 for driveways — is compacted in 2-inch lifts and does the actual structural work, spreading loads and draining water so freeze-thaw cannot heave the surface. Its volume is the same math as any fill: area × depth ÷ 27 for cubic yards — a 120 sq ft patio at 4 inches needs 1.5 yards of base gravel, which usually outweighs the pavers themselves.
Over the compacted base goes exactly 1 inch of bedding sand, screeded flat — thicker sand feels generous and creates the wavy settling it seems to prevent (a 120 sq ft patio needs just 10 cubic feet, about a third of a yard). After the pavers are laid and compacted, joint sand (polymeric, which hardens against weeds and washout, is the modern default) sweeps into the gaps, and edge restraint — spiked plastic or concrete edging — locks the field so it cannot creep outward. Every failure mode of a paver patio maps to one skipped element of that list, which is why the list is short and non-negotiable.
Layout, Slope, and Doing It Once
Good installs are planned flat on paper first. Slope the surface away from the house at about 1/4 inch per foot (a 12-ft-deep patio finishes 3 inches lower at its outer edge) so rain leaves; set finished height against door thresholds and existing walks before digging, since the excavation is finished height minus the full section (pavers + sand + base) — typically 7-9 inches of digging that surprises first-timers. Dry-lay a starter row to check the pattern against the space, and begin square from the longest fixed edge; sliver cuts at a visible edge can often be avoided by shifting the field half a paver, exactly as with tile.
